Bag Ban II

Funny how these things cycle back around. It was two years ago when I wrote about efforts to ban plastic shopping bags. (“Bag Bans”).

Now California has declined to apply the ban statewide. The argument came down to the environment vs. bag manufacturers. The article claimed “personal choice” opposed the environmentalists, but if the stores in California are anything like they are in Connecticut, plastic is the only visible option. One has to run around the store to locate paper. A spurious choice, it seems.

Here’s a suggestion: Instead of banning disposable plastic bags, follow the lead of Price Rite and charge for them with the fee going to the government. That would help California’s budget problems and cut the number of bags that wind up in landfills.

I’d still get one occasionally just to dispose of used kitty litter.
